Jane Mitchell honoured with highest accolade

Winemaker Jane Mitchell from Mitchell Wines is the first woman to be honoured as a Life Member of the Australian Wine Industry, Australian Grape & Wine's highest accolade.

This award acknowledges Jane's outstanding achievements and efforts over many years in the winery, boardrooms, and community and her contribution to creating a vibrant, modern industry.

Jane has accomplished much in her career. As a pioneer, Jane was one of the first female graduates from Roseworthy in 1978. She put a significant mark on the Australian industry and the Clare Valley region from this date forward.

Jane was one of the first appointees of the South Australian Tourism Commission, spent 12 years on the Australian Regional Winemakers' Forum and Winemakers' Federation of Australia Council, and served a six-year term with the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Board.

She also instigated the formation of Clare Valley Winemakers Inc in 1976 the Clare Gourmet Weekend concept in 1985.

As an advocate for inclusion in the workplace and her tireless efforts in promoting gender diversity within the wine industry, this recognition is fitting.

"This award recognises her outstanding achievement and contribution to the nation's wine industry over and above an individual's career achievements," says Australian Grape & Wine Chairman Sandy Clark.

With more than 43 vintages in the portfolio, the Mitchell Wines team consists of 60% of women, and they are distributed evenly through the vineyard, winery operations and management.

With Jane and her husband Andrew handing the management of Mitchell Wines to their children, Jane has spent the last 24 months mentoring the next generation to continue the Mitchell Wines legacy.

"I've spent the last few years reflecting on our family's vision, values and legacy. Mentoring my three children has not been without its challenges, but I love supporting their growth and development and ultimately creating a culture of co-leadership within our business model.

"My life's work as championing the Clare Valley and Mitchell Wines has established a strong foundation and a healthy work environment that will provide the next generations with long-lasting links to the Clare Valley."
