2016 Semillon

On an odd little corner of our celebrated Watervale Riesling vineyard you will find a small parcel of Semillon vines, which is used to create a wine we have dubbed “happiness in a bottle.” As one of only a handful of Clare Valley wineries to produce a Semillon it is with great pleasure each year we release this approachable, enjoyable and delicate wine.

Tasting Note

Pale green gold in colour, the wine has a delicate spicy nose with citrus and lemony aromas. The wine dances across the palate, leaving a tingle on the tongue. Our Semillon is fills the mouth with extra weight and fruit flavours that are long and sustained.

Vineyard Region

The fruit for this wine comes from a corner of our Single vineyard in Watervale, which was planted by Peter McNicolMitchell in 1962. The site is dry-grown, and no artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides have been used in this vineyard. As a result, the vineyard is flush with a healthy eco-system of bees, wasps and spiders, drawn to the area by the rich clovers between the vines.

Growing Conditions

A mild summer and perfect ripening condition resulted in a very early and short vintage, with the majority of fruit picked in February. The mild conditions brought on excellent flavour development and great balance in the vineyards.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed, chilled and drained immediately. We reserve only the first free-run juice for the Semillon. The juice is then run into French oak barrels for fermentation with wild yeast and aged on lees for 12 months.
