Watervale Riesling

About this wine

- style commenced in 1977
Riesling can lay claim to being the world's most noble grape. It offers great intensity of flavor and tells the story of its origins without the need for intervention. That is why we cultivate our vineyards organically.
The story of Watervale is one well worth telling with classic, intense citrus aromas and dry tangy flavours that come alive in the mouth. Our Watervale Riesling is a refreshing wine of poise and balance with lees contact to soften the wine. It finds enough roundness in the mouth to balance a pleasingly mineral and classically crisp, dry finish.

2015 Watervale Riesling - Chris Shanahan
Jane and Andrew Mitchell offer a unique Riesling from dry-grown vines planted in 1960. Andrew says, "This is our 'natural' wine", fermented spontaneously to complete dryness with ambient yeasts and with no acid adjustment - a rare achievement in the warm Clare Valley. The spontaneous ferment, and six months' maturation on spent yeast cells, mutes some of the Riesling's aromatic high notes while leaving the intense, citrusy varietal flavour intact. The process also adds a deliciously rich texture to the wine. In 2015 this resulted in a full but fine, chewy textured Riesling with racy lime-like flavour and acidity and bone-dry, ultra fresh finish.

2014 Watervale Riesling - Chris Shanahan
Jane and Andrew Mitchell offer a unique take on riesling, well removed from the majority of styles found on retail shelves. Andrew says, "This is our ´natural´wines", fermented spontaneously to complete dryness with ambient yeasts and with no acid adjustment - a rare achievement in the warm Clare Valley. The spontaneous ferment, and several months maturation on spent yeast cells, mutes some of the riesling´s aromatic high notes while leaving the intense, citrusy varietal flavour intact. The process also adds a deliciously rich texture to the wine. The result: a rounded mouth-caressing riesling with concentrated flavours and crisp, bone dry finish.

Bright green-straw; the fragrant/flowery bouquet leads into a crisp, relatively firm, palate; has all the minerally structure one could wish for, with lime fruit at its core.

2008 Watervale Riesling
Vibrant colour; delicate florals are offset by pure lime and talc. aromas; tight and textural, with a distinctly mineral core enhancing the lime fruit and focused acidity.
