2013 Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

A wine of history and consistency, our Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is produced in the old-fashioned claret style with the opulent fruit sourced from the vineyard that surrounds our family homestead. We are fortunate enough to take in the view of these vines each morning - the vines that have inspired years of Mitchell wines. A sentimental favourite, this is a wine that will only get better with age and will reward those who show patience and planning.

First Vintage made 1975

Tasting Note

A classic Clare Valley Cabernet. The bouquet is an arrangement of customary cabernet varietal characteristics, with hints of blackcurrant, tobacco and a touch of violet perfume brought to life in harmony with a subtle overlay of Clare Valley mint. The mature cabernet fruit flavours are lifted at the front palate and are sustained through the fine bodied, long palate that leads to a silky smooth, dry tannin finish. As this Cabernet Sauvignon enters its best drinking years, this wine’s track record confirms its long life ahead.

Vineyard Region

This is a truly home-grown wine, with the fruit sourced from a single vineyard surrounding our homestead in Sevenhill. The vines were planted in 1982 and the land, formerly an orchard, has harvested fruit for more than 100 years. The soils are deep seated but not rich, having been planted and farmed for generations.

Growing Conditions

2013 was a superb growing season. With below average rainfall the vines had a low yield with small berries but great flavour development. Although there were some hot days over summer the nights were generally cool.

The juice for this wine was fermented mostly in small open slate tanks, before being hand plunged with a significant portion given extended maceration on skins for 40 days. The wine was aged in small French oak barrels for 24 months before bottling without filtration.
