12 Wines of Christmas... with the Mitchells

12 days of Christmas paired with our favourite 12 Mitchell wines to get festive with!

On Christmas Day, we will be cracking open 12 bottles of our Mitchell wines, and this year, we’d love you to join us in our Christmas tradition. So, here’s the wrap up of what we will be eating and (of course) drinking this Christmas.

Get ready… it’s going to be a big Christmas!

We always start off the day exchanging and opening presents, with a glass of our 2018 Kinsfolk Gruner Veltliner in hand. It’s silky smooth, it’s well balanced and we believe it’s the perfect drink to kick-start the day. A glass of Gruner Veltliner is by far a better start to the day than a coffee and is closely followed by the quintessential Aussie Christmas Day drink… our Sparkling Peppertree Shiraz, of course! Popping this beauty will certainly have you in the festive spirit and ready for the festivities ahead.

Now, every Aussie knows that no Christmas Lunch is complete without seafood. Whether it be oysters, prawn cocktails, lobster tails or all of the above, Riesling is always our wine of choice and it should be yours too. Fortunately, we have a Riesling to suit every palate. Our 2010 McNicol Riesling never disappoints with pleasant citrus and spice characters, while our 2014 Watervale Riesling provides a fresh and zesty accompaniment. Meanwhile… if you would prefer a layered wine with a harmonious balance of acidity and sweetness, our 2017 Kinsfolk Riesling is definitely the way to go. Yes, we’re spoilt for choice in the Riesling department!

Now we move onto our lighter reds for lunch and we find that our 2017 Kinsfolk Grenache and 2014 GMS go down a treat – especially since they go so well with ham and turkey. We can personally vouch for the fact that you’re onto a winner with either of these combos.

Empty again… Can’t have that! It’s Christmas and you deserve to experience some of the best-aged reds that the Clare Valley has to offer. Our glasses will be topped up with our 2008 McNicol Shiraz or our Sevenhill Vineyard Cab-Sav – which will inevitably put Dad to sleep after a big feed and a hearty red.

As soon as Dad arises from his ahem… ‘traditional’ afternoon Christmas nap, out come the cheeseboards. Our favourite cheeses, Gorgonzola Picante, Manchego and Comte, will certainly make an appearance… and they pair beautifully with our 2018 Nobel Semillion. This drop is rich with flavours of honey and marmalade, balanced by a crisp acid on a lingering luscious finish.

Finally, dessert comes out and by this point, all jeans are unbuttoned and food is the last thing on your mind. However, we’re always up for the challenge and somehow manage to fit another meal in! To add a little kick to thatChristmas puddingthat was passed down from Great-Great-Granny, we recommend pouring a splash of our Old Liqueur Riesling over the top. Yep,Granny’s Christmas puddingis certainly going to be spruced up this Christmas.Â
