James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2009 - 5

*****  Semillon 2006 - Given complexity and structure by barrel ferment in French oak (mainly old) without compromising the grassy varietal fruit or delicacy; good line and length.  Screwcap.  13%. Rating 94 To 2016

****+ Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz 2005 - A restrained approach invests the wine with elegance and length; fine, supple mouthfeel; fine tannins, good length, controlled oak.  Screwcap. 14.5%. Rating 93 To 2020

****+ Sparkling Peppertree Shiraz NV - Light but bright red hue; nicely balanced, wth a delicacy and freshness often lacking; plenty of spicy black fruits before a pleasingly fry finish.  Multi-vintage, 4 years on lees; disgorged May 2006. Cork.        Rating 93 To 2013

****+ McNicol Clare Valley Shiraz 2000 - Medium-bodied, showing the expected development one would expect, the flavours moving into an earthy, secondary spectrum, supported by savoury tannins.  Now or in 5 years. Screwcap. Rating 91 To 2013

****+ Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 - Youthful wine, with the cassis and blackcurrant of the bouquet and fore-palate still to mesh with the tannins; will likely be long lived.  Screwcap. Rating 91 To 2024

**** Watervale Riesling 2007 - Intense bouquet of herb, lime and mineral is repeated on the powerful palate; has quite grainy structure.  Screwcap. 13.5% Rating 89  To 2013

**** Grenache/Sangiovese/Mourvedre 2004 - Good colour; in typical Clare style, with strong spicy notes to the cherry fruits and lingering tannins; creeps up on you.  Screwcap. Rating 89 To 2012

Recent Reviews for Mitchells

Mitchell 1999 McNicol Shiraz - Tony Love, The Advertiser Newspaper, March 12th 2007

It's rare to get an aged shiraz as a current release, so with eight years of maturity we see new depths of character, a juiciness that still seems fresh and cool, lifts of mocha and mint chocolate, a smoothness on the palate, lingering long and lazily.  14.5%.

Mitchell Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz 2004 - David Lawrason, torontolife.com

Prominent Aussie critic James Halliday gives this a 92. Though I often score lower than he does, I'm swept away as well.  Explosive blackcurrant, mince-meat, chocolate and the black pepper that shiraz is famous for.  Full bodied, initially sweet, then a firm, dry finish.  Excellent length, power and poise.  Now to 2014.

Mitchell GSM 2003 - Tony Love, The Advertiser Newspaper, Feb 20th 2007

When you see the GSM tag it usually means grenache, shiraz and mourvedre, but here the 'S' is sangiovese and even though it's a small percentage in the blend, it shows its earth and herbs traits in the engine block of the wine, sitting well with its trademark warm-blood line and spiced plum pudding richness.

Mitchell Semillon 2006 - 13% alcohol, screw cap, 93+++ points

The best of Watervale's priceless terra rossa on limestone or calcite or whatever it is gives rise to this remarkable semillon.  Its wild yeasts, combined with that terroir, give the wine an alluring acrid edge the like of which I'd normally expect of Bordeaux or Sancerre whites.  Then comes all that wholesome lemon-and-lime sabayon character which twists neatly around the finest seasoned french oak.  it's very tody, determinedly individual wine; perfect for an Alsace-style choucroute with smoked wursts.

Mitchell Watervale Riesling 2007, Sip n Save promotion - March 2007

Over the last few vintages, Mitchell has consistently been one of the best Clare Valley Riesling's on the market.  The fine, dry palate displays classic varietal fruit flavours of jasmine flower and lime that lead into a crisp, yet lingering finish.  Zesty and refreshing on the palate, enjoy it with some freshly cooked garlic prawns.

Mitchell GSM Grenache Sangiovese Mourvedre 2003

Talk about more-ish!  This blend is one to enjoy on its own or have with pizza, pasta or veal.  It is predominatly red berries with a delicious savouriness, and touches of coconut, vanilla and spice.  And check the vintage, it's already five years old.                                                                Rick Allen - Manly Daily March 2008

Gourmet Traveller WINE - 100 Top New Releases

The 2007 Mitchell Watervale Riesling and the 2005 Mitchell Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz have both been included in Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazines 100 Top New Releases as reviewed by Huon Hooke - February 2008

5 stars (95 points) - 2007 Mitchell Watervale Riesling

The nose is beautifully expressive and floral, with background lemon and herbal notes.  It's a full, rich style that explodes in the mouth; big, deep flavour which is properly dry and very impressive; 2007 was not a subtle year in Clare.  Drink now or in the next 6 years.

4 stars (92 points) - 2005 Mitchell Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz

As usual, this is peppery in name only.  Fruit-driven cassis and blackberry aromas and discreet oaking are the Mitchell trademarks.  It has 14.5 per cent alcohol but is still lean-ish and elegant with good balance.  A very good drink.  Drink now in the next 12+ years.
